Database integrity

The integrity of the data files are the single biggest problem experienced by some users.  In many cases this application will be one of few sharing files over the network at the same moment in time.  Users will lock and unlock files and records without knowing about it.  Project Office has proved to be extremely stable under normal operating conditions.  We have found over the years that power failures, network configuration problems and faulty computers are the major source of data corruption.  All these can be solved with proper IT administration.

The file status option under the Help main menu will verify the files and report on possible problems.  Not all problems are picked up in this quick test, but an indication is given of specific problems picked up by the program.

We have build in some data repair facilities to assist users to correct problems as quickly as possible.  The first problem area are corrupt index files.  These files act as an index to the actual record and effect the order that records are processed.  The reindex option under maintenance will repair all these files.  It is important to get all users to exit the program when this is done.  It is also possible to schedule this activity during a quiet time during the night.  Please contact your distributor or AvData to implement this option.

Fixing a problem database when a recent backup is available is by far the quickest way of repairing/recovering data.  Please make sure that regular backups are done.

It is also possible to rebuild a specific file when the actual data is corrupt.  The file rebuild option under maintenance will allow users to rebuild these files.  A complete new file structure is created when a file is rebuild.  The old data is then appended to the new file and any damaged records can be corrected.
